Project Overview

  • Client: Holcim (Aggregate Industries)

  • Started: 2005

  • Duration: ongoing

  • Location: Purfleet, Essex

  • Project Description

Since 2005 Recycled Roadways have been providing waste asphalt processing services at the high volume asphalt production plant of Aggregate Industries (now Holcim) in Essex. The works are scheduled a campaign crushing basis.

We established a permanent facility which is fully integrated into the site. It consists of a 36 tonne hybrid excavator, a hybrid electric Impact Crusher with postscreen and loading shovel. Two Recycled Roadways' operatives carry out the works as part of the site team.

The Purfleet site has a processing area where large volumes of waste stock are built up between campaigns. Waste asphalt material from road plainings and hot-returned asphalt are collected and tipped at the site by Aggregate Industries and contractors working on their behalf.

Our team mobilise to site and set up ready to crush and screen the waste asphalt into finished product (0-20mm) for new asphalt production.  The resultant materials are laboratory-tested for compliance against specification for size and bitumen content.

We recycled around 150,000 tonnes of asphalt material for Holcim at Purfleet each year. In April 2024 we introduced our first RM120X post screen hybrid electric crusher to help reduce fuel consumption and the carbon footprint of our operation there.
