Project Overview
In 2013 Recycled Roadways was appointed to conduct processing of waste asphalt at Holcim’s new Colnbrook Depot in Heathrow. The work was conducted on a campaign crushing basis.
Our facility was fully integrated into the site’s central processing area which involved lots of interaction with other site traffic. Our semi-permanent set-up included a hybrid electric Impact crusher, 3-way screening plant which was fed by a 36-tonne hybrid excavator and loading shovel. Two trained operatives carried out the works as part of the site team.
Reclaimed asphalt material was transported and tipped on-site by the client and contractors working on its behalf. When stocks reached a suitable level our team mobilised to site and set up ready to crush and screen the waste asphalt into two grades of product (0-10mm and 10-20mm) which were used as feedstock for new asphalt production. The resultant materials were laboratory-tested for compliance against specification for size and bitumen content.
We recycled approximately 100,000 tonnes of asphalt material for Holcim each year.
In 2024 we introduced our RM120 X hybrid electric crusher and dual fuel screener to the works. The RM120 is extremely fuel efficient and the screener is powered by the crusher’s generator meaning it is not consuming diesel during production. This set-up reduced fuel consumption and our carbon footprint by 30%. The crusher can also be plugged into mains supply electric to further reduce CO2 emissions if a suitable, feasible power source is available.
