Project Overview

  • Client: Holcim

  • Start: Jun 2025

  • Duration: 3 years

  • Location: Isle of Grain, Kent

  • Project Description

In May 2025 Recycled Roadways was appointed to provide aggregate handling services at the Isle of Grain port in Kent for construction products company Holcim.

Monthly consignments of 100,000 tonnes of crushed granite are transported by ship from the Glensanda quarry in Scotland and discharged at the Isle of Grain via a ship-to-shore conveyor and radial conveyor belt storage area at the port.

Using loading shovels and articulated dump trucks (ADTs) we relocate most of the consignment to the port’s transport depot where it is loaded directly into 8-wheel tipper lorries or artic-bulkers for distribution throughout the UK.

We process approximately a quarter of each consignment on-site using crushing/screening equipment to generate aggregate products for the asphalt/construction products market in the South East which are loaded directly into road, rail or barge transportation off site.

We have established a facility at the port which is fully integrated into the client’s team. Our Contracts Manager oversees the work of 8-10 site operatives, and our plant consists of 4 x loading shovels, 2 x ADTs, 40-tonne excavator, 2 x triple-deck screening facilities, wash plant and a tractor/dust suppression bowser.

Work is typically arranged on a 24/7 basis using day and night shifts when consignments are delivered.
